Law enforcement officials monitored streets in and around Braamfontein on Wednesday after students took to the streets to protest against a 10pm curfew at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits).

Roads had to be closed overnight following clashes between police and students.

The student representative council (SRC) took to Twitter with a number of photos of injured people‚ including reweeting its former president Shaeera Kalla: "There is an 18 year old homeless kid who was shot the face. The police were shooting in Braam tonight indiscriminately."

He also posted: "We’re trying to document the size of the bullets to see the distance and type of weapons being used to challenge police brutality with Ipid [Independent Police Investigative Directorate]."

Giving aid to the injured was medical student Yahya Docrat‚ who posted: "Walking in Braamfontein with hand up‚ just like our parents did during #apartheid #Medics #Wits."

The SRC also retweeted student Poseidon‚ who said: "Oscar Pistorius received bail for killing his girlfriend and now #MceboDlamini is considered a flight risk Wait how did we arrive to that?"

Dlamini was arrested on Sunday morning and charged with public violence‚ theft‚ possession of dangerous weapons and assault. He will know on Wednesday whether he will receive bail.

The state opposed bail on the basis that the student leader‚ whom it emerged in court was born in Swaziland and only obtained a South African citizenship in 2014‚ might skip the country.
