Police were called to a protest by angry SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members outside Tshwane’s Sammy Marks Centre on Thursday disrupting a metro council meeting.

Tshwane metro cops used stun grenades to disperse the crowd that wanted to invade the council meeting. It was unclear what the protesters were demanding.

Protest disrupted the previous council meeting.

Metro cops have kept security tight there since Thursday morning‚ demanding that councillors also produce proof of identity before being let in.

Executive mayor Solly Msimanga earlier presented reports for adoption in council but the ANC requested a caucus on these documents.

By early afternoon, the council meeting had not made any progress.

Msimanga wanted to table reports to shed light on the state of the council’s finances‚ the appointment of an acting city manager and performance of some of the city’s entities.

At the previous meeting‚ protesters reached the door of the venue where a council meeting was in session. The glass door was shattered when the angry mob tried to force their way into the meeting.
