Former KwaZulu-Natal education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni has quit politics along with economic development MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu.
"I have resigned‚" Nkonyeni said on Tuesday.
"I want to migrate to the corporate sector. My ANC leaders are supportive of this move‚" she said.
Asked where exactly she was going‚ Nkonyeni said she had not decided.
"Not decided yet. I want to rest for a month and reorganise myself."
News of her resignation comes at the same time of the swearing-in of new MECs‚ one of whom had still not decided whether to accept the post or not.
The South African Communist Party (SACP) was locked behind closed doors on Monday night discussing if Themba Mthembu should accept the position of MEC for agriculture and rural development in the KZN government.
He was one of the new faces announced by Premier Willies Mchunu as he made sweeping changes to the provincial executive.
Mthembu was still not present by 8am‚ the scheduled start of the swearing-in ceremony.
TMG Digital understands the SACP provincial secretary wanted to consult the SACP before accepting the position.
Nkonyeni‚ also an SACP member‚ joined the legislature in 1999 and by 2004 she was already an MEC for health.
In 2009‚ she became the speaker of the legislature following a tumultuous ministerial period.
She came back to government in 2013 after Senzo Mchunu had become premier following the departure of Zweli Mkhize. — TMG Digital/Sunday Times
