Asset manager Mergence Investment Managers has appointed Sholto Dolamo as its new MD with effect from July 1.

The new appointment comes just two months after Dolamo resigned from Public Investment Corporation (PIC), which manages about R2.3-trillion in government employees’ pension savings.

Dolamo has held senior roles at the PIC, including acting chief investment officer, and executive head of research and project development, as well as acting GM for listed equities.

Before joining the PIC in 2015, he worked at Stanlib Asset Management as a fund manager and then moved to RMB Asset Management.

“I have dealt with Sholto over many years and have a high regard for his business acumen and leadership,” Mergence founder and executive chair Masimo Magerman said on Thursday.

“He was one of the few senior people who ‘held things together’ during a very tough time for the PIC and helped to forge its future vision.”

Before entering the financial services sector, Dolamo pursued a specialised career in resources and precious metals, working as an engineer and scientist in the industry. He has an MSc in engineering from Wits University and an MBA from the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

“I felt the time was right to move back into the private sector, and Mergence attracted me because of its reputation as an innovative institutional fund manager with a strong, 18-year track record across both public and private markets,” Dolamo said.

“They have also had diversity, equity and inclusion at the heart of their business since inception in 2004.”

Mergence, which was founded in 2004, oversees R35bn in assets under management.

Dolamo replaces Yoza Jekwa, the former CEO of Mergence, who has established Thrive Capital Partners, a woman-owned and -led investment firm focused on impact and infrastructure investing in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This venture is supported by Mergence by way of an enterprise development agreement, in terms of which Mergence has made certain contributions to assist Thrive in its journey towards success.
